Teacher

  • I am nervous that my students will know more about the device than i will?

    •

A:“practice makes perfect” and with the speed at which technology is changing, you will never stop learning and neither will your learners. Students that show confidence and advanced knowledge with the devices can become IT ambassadors working closely alongside teachers.

  • I have never used a tablet to teach from. Do you offer training?

    •

A:Part of the MaraMedia offering is FREE teacher training. The training course covers everything from the basics of using a tablet device, to examples of how lessons can be conducted using this new methodology. Contact support@Maramedia.co.za for details on the course.

  • How easy is it to teach with the IDMs?

    •

A:Through the use of a cross-platform digital application, teachers can use the tablets to project content in the classroom. Teachers are enabled access to explanations, animations and 3D-graphics to explain concepts easier, which ultimately improves the quality of education. They will no longer spend most of their time trawling through many different resources to add to the curriculum and their lesson plans, but will have more time to devote to engaging with their learners, moulding their knowledge and focusing on personal interaction. Portability of the tablets also means that education can take place anywhere – not necessarily in a classroom.

  • What if I don’t have Internet access at home?

    •

A:You need Internet access to download the IDM’s onto your tablet and download any updates for your device and IDM’s. Once the IDMs are downloaded, they work as an offline solution i.e.: they can be accessed without internet connection. In order to receive tablet and IDM updates, the device will need to have internet connection. If you do not have Wi-Fi at home, we recommend you purchase a tablet with both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

  • Does my class need to be connected to the Internet in order to view the IDM’s?

    •

A:No, once the Interactive Digital Manual has been downloaded, the enriched media content is embedded and requires no connectivity unless your class needs to share a document such as sending an assignment or download additional resources posted by the teacher. You will require connectivity for free updates to your manual. The LMS functionality will require internet access.

  • What grades are available?

    •

A:All subjects for grade 6,7, 8 and 9 are available. For 2014, the following grade 10 subjects are available: English Home Language, Afrikaans First Additional Language, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Mathematical Literacy, Geography, History, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Visual Art and Dramatic Art.

  • What if my school is not ready to implement a digital solution across the board and have a BYOD policy?

    •

A:MaraMedia cater for all stages of digital implementation. 1: MaraMedia offer a printed workbook solution with CAPS alligned content, activities and assignments all in one manual. These books have spaces open for students to fill in answers. Teachers can use the digital IDMs projected onto a board and have access to additional images, animations and explanations while students follow the teacher in the printed manual. 2: The school follows a BYOD policy and student and teacher work concurrently on their devices. 2A: activites and assignments can be downloaded as pdf files onto the device, completed electronically and emailed through to the teachers. 2B: each student can purchase a worksheet book containing all the associated activities and assignments in book format.

  • How compatible are the interactive digital manuals with the Curriculum Assessments Policy Statement (CAPS)?

    •

A:They are fully compatible but also extend beyond the scope of CAPS and offer a comprehensive teaching solution. Lateral extension ensures that learners are adequately prepared for the demands of tertiary education.

  • Will hardware solutions make it tough for schools to stay current?

    •

A:MaraMedia has established a support desk that offers advice to schools about possible service providers for hardware acquisition, infrastructure setup and data connectivity. MaraMedia can also advise on the use of WiFi routers versus 3G connectivity. At the very least, MaraMedia will be able to steer schools towards service providers that can assist with a customised solution.

  • Will the cost of tablets not be prohibitive to most schools?

    •

A:Access to a number of tablets, and even the most well-known brands, has become more affordable as their original prices are greatly reducing. The interactive digital manuals are far more cost-effective than the printed manuals, due to the elimination of paper and delivery costs, thereby also significantly reducing the carbon footprint of printing. Many cell-phone providers and banks now also offer tablets interest-free through various packages.

  • Will these manuals be able to operate on different devices?

    •

A:The MaraMedia app is device agnostic, which means it works on Apple and Android devices. For Android we recommend Samsung, Nexus, ONYX and SWAG tablets as other Android devices do not have the processing capabilities required. Please conact our support desk for an updated list of compatible tablets.

  • What is the anticipated teacher/ school uptake of this new method of teaching? Will it be difficult to break through the notion of how school has always been taught and take it to the next level?

    •

A:The interactive digital manuals will revolutionise education in South Africa and even the world, transforming the classroom as we know it. It is a matter of exposing teachers to this format and all the capabilities that will now be at their fingertips. Learners will no longer be passive recipients of knowledge gleamed from textbooks, but active participants in an educational partnership between teacher, learner and parent. However, this can only be fully achieved by engaging learners at a level that excites, enthuses and compels them. In a world where learners are constantly confronted with new technology, it is vital that we make use of it to ensure that they are adequately prepared for the world of tomorrow. Technology in education should not be viewed as a distant future - it is already a part of our learners’ entertainment and should therefore be utilised as a tool in their education as well.

  • How can issues of security be addressed?

    •

A:There are a number of anti-theft tools built into the tablets such as file encryption, password protection and the GPRS tracking ‘find device’ app that can be deployed. In addition, all tablets are allocated serial numbers so that in the event of theft, those devices can be blocked and the use restricted.

  • Will training to use the tablets in the classroom be costly and time- consuming?

    •

A:The user-friendly, menu-driven interface allows users to quickly learn and acquire the navigational skills needed to access the various tools and applications. MaraMedia can also recommend training providers for additional support.

  • How will the issue of cheating on exams and assignments be addressed?

    •

A:Exams will be written as usual in an exam room. There are also various tools such as date stamps and monitoring software that will enable greater control to be implemented with digital versus standard paper-based submissions.

  • How is the lack of access to the internet at many schools and homes being addressed?

    •

A:MaraMedia offers a solution to address the implementation of infrastructure of various levels at different schools. MaraMedia has a tiered approach to technology integration: •Printed manuals •Interactive Digital Manuals with printed worksheet booklets •Interactive Digital Manuals with electronic worksheets Once the MaraMedia app with in-app Interactive Digital Manuals have been downloaded from the Apple iStore or Android Marketplace, internet access is not required for interacting with the learning material. Despite this offline functionality, users can still access the Internet and use integrated online functionality to their advantage by making use of the MaraMedia Learning Management System through which teachers can seamlessly interact with learning material and learners.

  • Why not introduce e-readers that are much cheaper?

    •

A:Ultimately, you get what you pay for. E-readers may be cheaper, but they do not allow for the same educational functionalities, and lack all the interactive ability of the MaraMedia interactive digital manuals. E-readers are therefore merely a PDF display device. In addition, tablets have the advantage of built-in cameras and recording functionality, which can be easily used in classroom scenarios. For instance, learners’ assignments could include creating an advertisement, recording an interview or creating a PowerPoint presentation. Further to this, a learner will be able to download additional educational apps (scientific calculator, virtual laboratory, Skype, etc.) Imagine learning about a foreign culture through a Skype interview with learners in a foreign country, establishing instant penpals through social media connections and having

  • How will schools stay current with constantly changing software versions?

    •

A:MaraMedia will be in a position to advise schools on auxiliary apps to enhance the learning experience, from simple apps such as scientific calculators, to more complex virtual science laboratories. As the digital content can be easily updated via the Internet, the curriculum content will no longer be stagnant - it can be augmented with more information, making it easy for educators to relate subject content to current news.

  • How does customised learning ensure better management and scheduling tools?

    •

A:The subject content is organised according to structured didactical procedures, ensuring that each topic is introduced with the proper scaffolding to allow for more complex concepts to be introduced, explored and mastered with confidence. As learners are actively involved in the learning process, teachers are freed up to interact more with them individually, ensuring that they benefit from a one-on-one focus. Cutting down on the number of resources that need to be consulted for lesson preparation also allows teachers more time to engage with learners extra-murally, ensuring better teacher-learner relationships. Teachers can really get to know their learners, ensuring that the best possible approach is followed in their interaction in the classroom. Teachers will no longer need to trawl through more than 25 000 different apps in search of appropriate learning material.

Testimonials

On behalf of the parents, educators and above all the learners, we want to thank Maramedia Publishing for the huge investment in our school. On receiving the manuals in early January, the response from our Grade 8 educators was one of relief and excitement. Staff came in prior to school re-opening to do preparation and lesson planning with the new study material. We trust that Maramedia Publishing will be astounded by the improvement in our academic performance. Their input in the future of our learners and the youth of our country is much appreciated and commendable

    •

A:Yes, you can purchase hardcopies of the manuals, but it is not mandatory and purely optional. Worksheet booklets are also available to assist you with a hardcopy of the different activities and assignments that supplement the IDM’s.

  • What if I don’t have Internet access at home?

    •

A:You need Internet access to download the IDM’s onto your tablet and download any updates for your device and IDM’s. Once the IDMs are downloaded, they work as an offline solution ie: they can be accessed without internet connection. In order to receive tablet and IDM updates, the device will need to have internet connection. If you do not have Wi-Fi at home, we recommend you purchase a tablet with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. •

A:Slim and lightweight, tablets are a new type of internet-enabled computer that work in a similar way to smartphones, with touchscreens and downloadable apps. The tablet market has grown considerably since 2010, and various tablets are now available such as iPad, Samsung, Google and many more. It is recommended to purchase either an iPad, Samsung or Google Nexus tablet in order for the MaraMedia app to be completely functional. Please conact our support desk for an updated list of compatible tablets.
